Welsh Commercial Vehicle Specialist calls for more action on Welsh roads after Severn bridge toll reduction.

12 January 2018 by Craig Owens

Welsh commercial vehicle specialist Glenside Commercials has welcomed the news that Severn Bridge tolls have been reduced, but say more action is needed to put welsh businesses on a level playing field with those across the border.

The new charges, introduced will see van owners now paying £11.20 instead of £13.40 and lorry owners now paying £16.70 instead of £20.00 to cross back into Wales, but Mark Lovering believes that the bridge tolls are only part of the transport challenges Welsh businesses face.

Mark Lovering (Grey tie) shares a comment on the matter:

“We understand that the Severn tolls will be removed by the end of the year but the Welsh Government needs to urgently address the multiple transport and infrastructure challenges currently faced by Welsh businesses, that won’t just end when the tolls do.

“We supply and maintain vans, trucks and lorries throughout Wales from our base here in Caerphilly, and across the region, our customers tell us the same story about Welsh roads, i.e. Wales has over-congested motorways, there is no effective road network whatsoever between North and South Wales, and drivers constantly report being stuck in traffic on the M4.   Most of our fleet customers tell us that they have to account for ‘M4 congestion’ when planning their delivery schedules.

“This is the 21st Century and transport companies in Wales, like everyone else, need to maximise productivity in order to remain competitive – nobody wants to pay their staff to queue on the M4”.

“We will continue to do our part by ensuring fair prices, a high standard of service and safe, well maintained vehicles for all our customers".

Denise Lovering, former chair of Welsh Freight Council for FTA, has been involved in lobbying for the reduction/abolition of the Severn Tolls for the past ten years.

Denise shares a valuable insight on the subject.

“I’m delighted that, now the crossings are in public ownership, the VAT element has had to be removed bringing about a reduction in the toll for the first time and look forward to the tolls being completely removed by the end of 2018.They have stifled the economic growth of South East Wales for years and their removal will bring a huge benefit to the local economy.”
